Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Warm Oil Massage at Home

What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is a full-body warm oil massage from the Ayurvedic tradition. Therapists apply medicated sesame, coconut, or herbal oils in rhythmic strokes aligned with the body’s energy channels.

The dosha system

Ayurveda groups bodies into three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Your therapist may ask about your sleep, digestion, and skin to choose the right oil:

  • Vata — warming sesame oil with ashwagandha
  • Pitta — cooling coconut oil with brahmi
  • Kapha — stimulating mustard oil with eucalyptus

Benefits backed by tradition and research

  1. Improves circulation and lymph flow
  2. Calms the nervous system
  3. Nourishes skin and slows visible aging
  4. Eases joint stiffness
  5. Improves sleep quality and energy

What to expect at home

The therapist arrives with a portable table, warm towels, and pre-heated oil. A typical session lasts 60–90 minutes followed by a 10-minute rest. Plan to shower 30 minutes after, not immediately.

Ideal frequency

Weekly during winter or stressful work periods; fortnightly otherwise.
