Prenatal Massage at Home
Pregnancy changes everything about how your body feels, and standard massage is not designed for it. Prenatal massage is performed in a side-lying position with supportive pillows, which takes all pressure off the abdomen and lower back. Every technique used is specifically chosen for safety during pregnancy.
Every Kneadly therapist who performs Prenatal massage has completed specialist training in pregnancy massage. They understand which pressure points to avoid, how positioning changes across trimesters, and how to work around the specific discomforts that come with each stage of pregnancy.
Benefits of Prenatal massage at home
- Reduces lower back pain caused by the shifting centre of gravity during pregnancy
- Relieves hip pain and sciatic nerve pressure common in the second and third trimester

- Eases tension in the neck and shoulders from changed posture during pregnancy
- Improves sleep quality, particularly in the third trimester when comfortable positions are limited
- Lowers stress hormones which benefits both mother and baby
- Reduces the frequency and intensity of pregnancy headaches
Who is Prenatal massage best for
Prenatal massage is for expecting mothers at any stage of pregnancy. We recommend getting your doctor's approval before booking, particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy, placenta previa, preeclampsia or a history of premature labour. For straightforward pregnancies, massage is generally safe from the second trimester onwards. Some therapists are comfortable working in the first trimester. Mention your stage when you book and we will confirm.
What happens during a Prenatal session
Your therapist arrives with extra supportive pillows alongside the standard massage table setup. You lie on your side for the entire session, never face down. The pillows are arranged to support your bump, knees and head so your body is fully relaxed without any pressure on the abdomen.
Before starting, your therapist checks how far along you are, which areas are causing the most discomfort and whether your doctor has given any specific guidance. The session then focuses on your back, hips, legs and shoulders: the areas that carry the most strain during pregnancy.
What makes Prenatal massage different
Side-lying position throughout, with no pressure on the abdomen at any point
Extra supportive pillows for bump, knees and head
Specific pressure points avoided that can stimulate uterine contractions
Gentler pressure on the legs to protect against deep vein thrombosis risk
Oils used are pregnancy-safe, with no essential oils that are contraindicated during pregnancy

Book on WhatsAppCommon questions about Prenatal massage
Is Prenatal massage safe during the first trimester?
Most practitioners recommend waiting until the second trimester as the risk of miscarriage is highest in the first 12 weeks. Some of our therapists are comfortable working in the first trimester for low-risk pregnancies. Mention your stage when you book and we will confirm. Always get your doctor's approval first.
What position will I be in during the session?
You will be on your side for the entire session, supported by pillows under your bump, between your knees and under your head. You will never be asked to lie face down. The position is changed once during the session so both sides can be worked on.
Which areas does the therapist focus on?
The main focus areas are the lower back, hips, glutes, legs, feet, shoulders and neck: the areas that carry the most strain during pregnancy. The abdomen is not massaged.
Are the oils safe for pregnancy?
Yes. We use only pregnancy-safe carrier oils. Essential oils that are contraindicated during pregnancy (including rosemary, clary sage and jasmine) are never used in Prenatal sessions.
Can I book Prenatal massage in my third trimester?
Yes. Many customers find the third trimester the most beneficial time to book as back pain, swelling and sleep problems are most intense. Your therapist will adjust positioning and pressure to accommodate your stage.
Do I need a doctor's note to book?
We recommend getting your doctor's approval before your first Prenatal session, particularly if you have any pregnancy complications. For straightforward pregnancies most doctors support regular massage. We do not require a formal note but we ask you to confirm your doctor is aware when you book.
