Ayurvedic Massage at Home
Ayurvedic massage, specifically abhyanga, is one of the oldest therapeutic practices in the world. It has been part of Indian wellness tradition for over 5,000 years. Unlike Western massage which primarily targets muscles, abhyanga works on the whole system: the skin, the lymphatic network, the nervous system and the body's energy channels.
The defining feature of abhyanga is warm herbal oil. The oil is not just a lubricant. It is the treatment. Specific herbs are infused into the base oil depending on your dosha type and what your body needs. The oil is warmed before the session and applied in generous amounts using long rhythmic strokes that follow the direction of body hair and energy flow.
Benefits of Ayurvedic massage at home
- Deeply nourishes the skin, as the herbal oils penetrate beyond the surface layer
- Calms the nervous system, as the rhythmic strokes have a direct effect on the vagus nerve
- Supports natural detoxification through lymphatic stimulation
- Balances vata, pitta and kapha doshas depending on the oil blend used
- Improves sleep quality, particularly for vata types who experience anxiety and insomnia
- Relieves joint stiffness and muscle fatigue
- Improves digestion when combined with abdominal massage strokes
- Leaves the skin visibly softer and more hydrated after a single session
Who is Ayurvedic massage best for
Ayurvedic massage works well for anyone drawn to traditional Indian wellness practices, but it is particularly effective for people who feel chronically run down, have dry skin, experience anxiety or disturbed sleep, or feel that their body and mind are out of sync. People who have tried Western massage and found it too mechanical often respond strongly to abhyanga. The experience is noticeably different in rhythm, intention and effect.
What happens during an Ayurvedic session
Your therapist arrives with pre-prepared herbal oils. The specific blend depends on the season, your dosha type and what you describe as your current state when they check in. The oil is gently warmed before being applied.
The strokes in abhyanga are different from Western massage: longer, more continuous and deliberately rhythmic. They follow the direction of body hair and the flow of the body's energy channels rather than working against muscle grain. The effect builds gradually over the session. Most customers feel a deep heaviness and warmth that is unlike anything in a standard massage.
After the session you will be lightly covered with a warm towel to allow the oils to continue absorbing. Your therapist recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before showering so the herbal oils can fully penetrate the skin.

What is the difference between Ayurvedic massage and Swedish massage?
Swedish massage focuses on muscle relaxation using Western techniques. Ayurvedic abhyanga works on the whole system (skin, lymph, nervous system and energy channels) using warm herbal oils and rhythmic strokes rooted in a 5,000-year-old Indian tradition. The experience and the effects are noticeably different.
What is my dosha and how does it affect the session?
In Ayurveda, doshas are three energy types: vata, pitta and kapha. Most people are a combination. Your therapist will ask a few simple questions before the session to understand your type and choose the right oil blend. You do not need to know your dosha in advance.
Will the oil stain my sheets or clothes?
The oils used are natural and generally wash out of fabric. We recommend wearing old or dark clothing after the session and putting down a towel on your bed if you plan to rest immediately after. Your therapist brings a protective sheet for the massage table.
Should I shower before or after the session?
You can shower before if you prefer but it is not necessary. After the session we recommend waiting at least 30 minutes before showering. The herbal oils continue absorbing into the skin and the benefits are stronger the longer you wait.
Is Ayurvedic massage suitable during pregnancy?
Not with our standard Ayurvedic service. Some herbal oils and pressure points used in abhyanga are contraindicated during pregnancy. If you are expecting, book our Prenatal Massage instead.
Can I book Ayurvedic massage same day?
Yes. Same-day bookings are available across all 18 cities from 8AM to 11PM. We recommend booking at least 2 hours in advance for evening slots.
